Use of peppermint essential oil

The health benefits of peppermint oil include its ability to treat indigestion, respiratory problems, headache, nausea, fever, stomach and bowel spasms and pain. Due to the presence of menthol, menthone and menthyl esters, peppermint and peppermint oil find wide applications in manufacture of soap, shampoo, cigarette, toothpaste, chewing gum, tea and ice cream.

Peppermint is a cross between watermint and spearmint and is native to Europe. Historically, the herb has been known for its medicinal uses. Hence it is often termed as the world’s oldest medicine.

Unlike many other herbs and essential oils, numerous health benefits of peppermint and peppermint oil have been studied and proved by the scientific community. As a result, peppermint oil is also sold in the form of capsules and tablets.

Peppermint oil is also used as a flavoring agent. You will find very few people who will not find peppermint suitable to their palate.

Peppermint oil contains numerous minerals and nutrients including manganese, iron, magnesium, calcium, folate, potassium, and copper. It also contains omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin A and Vitamin C.

The health benefits of peppermint oil include the following:

  • Indigestion: Peppermint oil is very helpful in digestion. Often people put a few drops of peppermint oil in a glass of water and drink it after their meal due to its digestive properties. It is carminative and therefore helps in removing gas. Peppermint oil is a good tonic for those who have a low appetite. It also helps during motion sickness and upset stomach. Preliminary research has proved that peppermint oil in the combination of caraway oil can be used for treating heartburns.
  • Clean Shining TeethDental Care: Peppermint oil, due to its antiseptic properties, is useful for dental care. It removes bad breath and helps teeth and gums deal with germs. No wonder, it is added in numerous toothpastes. It is also useful for treating toothaches.
  • Respiratory Problems: Menthol, which is present in abundance in peppermint oil, helps in clearing the respiratory tract. It is an effective expectorant and therefore provides instantaneous, though temporary, relief in numerous respiratory problems including nasal congestion, sinusitis, asthma, bronchitis, cold and cough. As a result, it is used in numerous cold rubs. When these cold rubs are rubbed on the chest, they remove nasal and respiratory congestion immediately.
  • Nausea and Headache: Peppermint oil is a good home remedy for nausea and headache. Applying peppermint oil in diluted form on the forehead is known to remove headache.
  • StressStress: Like most other essential oils, peppermint is able to provide relief from stress, depression and mental exhaustion due to its refreshing nature. It is also effective against anxiety and restlessness.
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome: The muscle relaxing property of peppermint oil has been found to ease irritable bowel syndrome. This has been validated through preliminary scientific research though the exact mechanism is still unknown.
  • Antispasmodic: Peppermint oil is very effective for gastroscopy, colonoscopy and during double-contrast barium enema. It is applied intraluminally. Further benefits of peppermint oil due to its antispasmodic properties are being studied.
  • Urinary Tract Infection: Peppermint oil can be used for treating urinary tract infection (UTI). However, thorough scientific studies are yet to be conducted to confirm this.
  • Pain Relief: Peppermint oil can be used externally for providing relief from pain. It is believed that the presence of calcium antagonism in peppermint oil aids in removing pain. It is cooling in nature and therefore helps reduce fever.
  • Immune System: Peppermint oil increases your immunity to diseases and therefore helps you in preventing a number of diseases.
  • Blood Circulation: It also improves blood circulation.
  • Hair Care: Peppermint oil is very useful for hair care as it gives a cooling effect to the head, and removes dandruff and lice.
  • Skin Care: Peppermint oil contains Menthol, which is good for skin. It gives a cooling effect. Further it nourishes dull skin and improves oily skin.

It is further believed that peppermint oil is useful for treating cancer and tuberculosis.

Peppermint blends well with various other essential oils including eucalyptus, rosemary, lemon, marjoram, etc.

Hindi SMS Collection – Maine Ek khwab adhura rakha..

Mere rab ne ye karam anokha rakha,
Di sari khushi par tanha rakha.
Toot jata hai har khwab pura hokar,
Isliye Maine Ek khwab adhura rakha..

Aap Aate Ho Ankho Me Chand Sitare Lekr
Jane Kaha Gye Khwab Hmare Lekr
Kitne Hi Dur Chale Jao Hmse Lekin
WaQt Ayga Apko Pas Hmare Lekar.

Dhire-Dhire Umar kat jati h
zindgi Yado ki kitab ban jati h
kabhi kisi ki yad bahut tadpati he
or
kabhi yado k sahare zindagi kat jati hai.

Romance

Uski yad mein guzarti meri har sham thi,
Mere dil se nikli har dua uske nam thi.
Ab mujhko ilzam na do bewafai ka yaro,
Mere hathon ki lakeeron mein wafa aam thi.
Qadar poocho unse jo karte hain mohabbat ki pooja,
Sirf usk sheher mein mohabbat meri badnaam thi.
Apni jaan ka nazrana kaise pesh karta usko,
Uske ishq mein har saans jo meri neelam thi.
Kaise chhor dete zindagi k safar mein tanha usko
Usk baghr to meri zindagi gumnam thi..

Bari Chah Hai Dil Ko,
Tujhe Paney Ki,
Tjhe Apna K Tra Ho Jney Ki
Mri Zaat K Reshay Reshay Me Bikhar Jaye,
Boht Haseen Hai Ada Tere Muskurany Ki.
Pas Betho Hath Mera Thaam Lo,
Qasam Uthao Mujhe Chor Kar Na Jane Ki.
Ham Se Kabhi Rooth Na Jana,
Agar Rooth Jao To Dua Bhi Karna Mere Mar Jane Ki.

Do din ke mehmaan ban ke,
wo alvida mujhe keh gaye,
kuch na us se puchh sake,
bas sochte hi reh gaye,
wo bhi gair mai bhi gair,
phir bhi kiya mujhe keh gaye,
dur to wo pehle hi the,
ab na jane kaha jake beh gaye
hum baithe the unki raho mai,
kisi aur ko sath le gaye
un ke liye ro bhi nahi sakte,
jate jate gair mujhe keh gaye
ose vidha karke hum,
na jane chup keise beh gaye
afsos na hua ose jane ka,
barri khushi se “bye” keh gaye
jaha bhi raho khush hi raho,
jannat tujhe mubarak ho
dost dost kehte kehte,
apni dosti bhi sath leh gaye……

Bye

Smile please

Smile don’t frown Look up don’t look down Believe in yourself Don’t let yourself go Just be who you are And let your live flow.

I’m not a fighter. I usually smile and then go into my room and cry my eyes out.

Start every day off with a smile and get it over with.

A smile confuses an approaching frown.

You are not fully dressed until you wear a smile.

If you’re not using your smile, you’re like a man with a million dollars in the bank and no checkbook.

Even if I am in a bad mood I have to smile and be nice to the fans.

A smile is a language that even a baby understands.

Wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been.

Don’t cry because it’s over, SMILE because it happened.

A smile is an inexpensive way to change your looks.

Keep a smile on your face and let your personality be your autograph.

People seldom notice old clothes if you wear a big smile.

If you haven’t seen your wife smile at a traffic cop, you haven’t seen her smile her prettiest.

A smile of encouragement at the right moment may act like sunlight on a closed-up flower; it may be the turning point for a struggling life.

A smile is a curve that sets everything straight.

I’ve got dreams in hidden places and extra smiles for when I’m blue.

Smiles are great investments: the more you collect, the better you feel.

A good neighbor is a fellow who smiles at you over the back fence, but doesn’t climb over it.

A smile takes but a moment, but the memory of it lasts forever.

A winning smile makes winners of us all.

Some people are too tired to give you a smile, so give them one of yours as no one needs a smile as much as the one who has no more to give.

A friendly look, a kindly smile, one good act, and life’s worthwhile.

Smile – it’s the second best thing you can do with your lips.

To receive a smile, give one away.

The shortest distance between two people is a smile.

If I had a star for every time you made me smile, I would be holding the night sky in my hand.

So many languages in the world, and a smile speaks them all.

What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. These are but trifles, to be sure, but scattered along the life’s pathway, the good they do is inconceivable.

A smile is a light in the window of the soul, indicating that the heart is at home.

Smiles form the channel of a future tear.

Today, if a smile comes to you, a happy smile that perhaps you can’t explain, it’s because in that moment I am thinking of you and smiling too.

Wrinkles should merely indicate where smiles have been.

Today, give a stranger one of your smiles. It might be the only sunshine he sees all day. Source unknown A spark of kindness starts a fire of love.

No smile is as beautiful as the one that struggles through the tears.

What friends are

And I never thought I'd feel this way
And as far as I'm concerned
I'm glad I got the chance to say
That I do believe I love you
And if I should ever go away
Well then close your eyes and try
To feel the way we do today
And then if you can remember
Keep smiling, keep shining
Knowing you can always count on me, for sure
That's what friends are for
For good times and bad times
I'll be on your side forever more
That's what friends are for
Well you came in loving me
And now there's so much more I see
And so by the way I thank you

Extra curricular activity for kids

Things You'll Need:

  • Art And Craft Supplies
  • Musical Instruments
  • Palm Handheld Organizers
  • Bulletin Boards
  • Calendars
  • Personal Organizers
  • Athletic Equipment
  1. 1

Remember that they're called extracurricular activities because they're extra. Your child's No. 1 priority must be schoolwork, so don't hesitate to make continued participation in sports or clubs contingent on maintaining a minimum standard of academic performance.

  2. 2

Sit down with your child and review her desired activities at the start of each new semester. Decide how much she can reasonably handle, and make the hard choices.

  3. 3

Make sure you and your child are aware of exactly how much time must be committed to a chosen activity. Participation in a high school varsity sport, for example, can involve a great deal more time than just after-school practice. Will there be games on the weekends? How far will your child have to travel to away games and how often? When does the sport's season begin and end?

  4. 4

Try to encourage your child to strike a balance between individual and group activities. Piano, tennis and printmaking are great, but rather solitary. Perhaps your child's interest in art could be developed through creating scenery for the drama club's spring production of "Oklahoma!"

  5. 5

Be sure your child understands that joining a club or team means making a commitment to fellow members and that you expect your child to fulfill that commitment. Barring exceptional circumstances, "it's boring" will not excuse him from sticking out the semester in Scouts.

  6. 6

No outside activities can be just as unhealthy as too many. If your child tends to be a loner, you might want to take the lead and investigate what teams or clubs exist in your area that jibe with your child's interests.

  7. 7

Older children, especially teens, sometimes shortchange family in favor of constant peer activities. Don't let your teen's extracurricular commitments override family dinners, special weekend plans or other important family time.

How your child smart

What Makes Your Child Learn? 8 Things You Need to Know About How Your Child is Smart

Learning styles vary and as a mom of two and a teacher, one of the first things that I realized was that every child (and adult for that matter) has their own learning style - their own way of being smart.

What do I mean by this? I mean that every individual has one or more ways in which they learn best - a way in which they make sense of things or process information. So why is this important (you may ask)? As a parent (teacher or student for that matter), if you know how your child learns, then you will also be able to figure out (to a degree) which teaching methods and styles will be of most benefit to your child. This may be why your child does not seem to "get it" when he is taught science from the text book, yet when he is taken outside where he can see and touch what he is learning about, he comes home wanting to be a scientist! What made the difference? The difference is in his learning style - the manner in which he best processes information. Another example may be that your child (like mine) finds it easier to memorize telephone numbers when they are put to music. Yet when asked to recite the months of the year (even after several teaching sessions), she just could not seem to get them in order - until of course, we put them to music.

Howard Gardener (a really smart guy by all accounts) did a lot of research on this and developed a theory called "multiple intelligence". Gardener figured that everyone is smart or intelligent, only in different ways! Here are the ways of smartness or intelligence that his research came up with;

Musical:

This is one of them most productive ways in which my oldest daughter learns. For example we put almost anything she needs to remember to a musical tune - this includes our telephone numbers, sounds of letters, spelling rules (i before e except after c), her lines to the nativity play - anything. And guess what? Years later, she still remembers some of those tunes as well as the all important facts. Try it sometime - even if you aren't the Von Trap Family Singers ;) It might make your child's learning experience more enjoyable while you have some fun too!

Naturalistic:

My friend Erin learns best this way. She loves the great outdoors, enjoys fishing, camping and kayaking. What does this mean for her learning style? Her mind is most receptive when she is outside and in tune with nature. Is it any wonder that Erin is a science major and teacher who always wants to take her students outside to teach them?

Linguistic:

Traditional teaching or lecturing usually targets learners who can best grasp written or spoken words. A teacher stands in front of a class and talks, hoping that the class has the ability or the right learning styles to catch on! Now that we know that not everybody learns this way, doesn't it make you wonder how many people fell through the cracks? While I know that a teacher cannot target all forms of intelligence, using more that one form is always a better idea.

Mathematical/Logical:

Some people just thrive when it comes to numbers or logic. You know, the child who always finishes the puzzles first or the one who calculates problems mentally at lightening speed. That is the person who has in-built mathematical or logical learning style! Believe me, that was not me as a kid.....

Bodily/Kinesthetic:

This is usually the child who needs to touch everything. I get the feeling my husband used to be like this when he was a child (smile)! He still wants to fix everything around him - in fact my eldest is convinced that "Daddy can fix anything". Many boys fall into this way of being smart and as parents and teachers we will benefit from teaching them in a way that learning will be achieved. They tend to enjoy hands-on experiments, making things with their hands - construction toys, playing with lego and blocks.

Spatial:

This is where one learns through pictures, wide space or confined areas. In this day and age where almost everything is visual, you can only begin to imagine how many people learn this way. In other words if your child can learn through pictures or spatial representation, let the picture be worth a thousand words!

Interpersonal:

Learning of this kind takes place through social experiences such as role play and team work. People who do well with this learning style are good judges of character - they can read people's intentions and motivations. While this used to be something that you either had or didn't have; these days so much of the day to day teaching is done in teams that this is becoming an acquired skill. If it comes naturally to your child, consider them well equipped to be smart when dealing with people.

Intrapersonal:

The focus of this learning style is based on self or inner reflection. This would be your quiet student who may not contribute much in class, but always seems to ace the quizzes. The one who may not always raise their hand to answer questions in class, but when asked directly, they almost always answer correctly. They learn by thinking deeply through all that they have heard.

Hopefully, this outline will give us an idea of how our children or students learn most effectively. It was an eye opener to me and I hope that with a little work, we can revolutionize our childrens' attitude towards learning - it will change for the better when we target their specific learning style.

creative ideas for kids

These are some supplies you will need to get started:

* Scissors; needle and thread; ruler or tape measure; pins; newspapers for pattern-making; cardboard for construction; colored markers; fabric paint; stickers; construction paper for ears and noses; glitter for space creatures, princesses, fairies; pipe cleaners for whiskers; yarn for hair, and feather boas.

* Felt -- it’s colorful, inexpensive, and doesn’t unravel. Netting, tulle and fake fur also come in handy and little girls’ just love to play dress-up with these.

* Assorted items from around the house such as plastic funnels, buckets, paper towel rolls, gallon milk containers, paper plates, aluminum foil and bubble wrap.

* Glues to avoid sewing including white craft or fabric glue, hot-melt glues used with a gun, fusible webbing when the adhesive is activated with the heat of an iron, a roll of basting tape, a temporary two-sided tape and spray adhesives.

Having assembled your supplies, now you’re ready for some creative costume fun:

* Start by dressing your child in a leotard and tights, a sweat suit, or a T-shirt, turtleneck and jeans. These become the base to build on and are ideal for creating insect and animal costumes like a bumblebee, lion or alligator. Black is a perfect color for pirates, devils, witches, magicians, vampires, mummies, and skeletons. Use reflective white tape for skeleton bones and wrap white gauze or felt strips around the entire body. A spider is easy to make using all black. You’ll need several pairs of black gloves and long black socks. Stuff the socks and gloves with fiberfill and attach one glove to each sock; attach each spider leg to the base costume. Add a black baseball cap with black pipe-cleaner antenna glued to it.

* A plain white sheet is the perfect base for ghosts, angels, saltshakers, toga-clad Romans and pandas.

* A box with large arm and head holes cut out is versatile. Square shapes work well for dice, a gift package, a hedgehog, porcupine, TV or Jack-in-the-box; rectangular boxes are perfect for longer-shaped costumes like a pencil/crayon, a tree, a domino, a thermometer, a carton of milk accompanied by a box of cereal or cookies, to make two costumes, a favorite candy bar, or a rocket.

* Old-fashioned cardboard is good for many costumes. Cut out a front and back and attach both sides over the shoulders with strong cording or Venetian blind tape and decorate. You can design a playing card like the king and queen of hearts, a chocolate chip cookie using a beige-felt circular cutout with chocolate-brown chips, a magazine or newspaper called “The Halloween Daily Planet” with amusing headlines on the front and back.

Masks and other accents add the finishing touches:

* Make sure they have smooth edges and generous eye and nose holes for safety.

* Face paints and theater-style make-up will come off easily if you coat your child’s face first with a thin under-layer of cold cream. Test for sensitivity and color fastness on a small patch of skin. Lightly powder the finished face to set it. Colored or glittery washout hair sprays are always fun.

* Add-ons can be hats, scarves, veils, wigs and hairpieces; jewelry like large gold-toned curtain rings can be used as earrings; fake eyeglasses, and false eyelashes.

* Props to buy: Stick-on noses, theatrical warts, scars, fangs, eyeballs, quirky ears, long nails, fake beards and mustaches. Voice-altering masks are devilish too! For safety, buy glow-in-the-dark face and costume accents or a reflective strip to run down the back of a costume or on the arms.

The best thing about Halloween costumes is that after the merriment, your make-believe fantasy figure is transformed back into a little angel!

Common marriage problems

Hello,

Some married couples experience problems once they have a baby. There are often changes in a couple’s sex life, and many women have insecurities about their bodies after having a baby. Married couples have to accept the reality that life is going to change – forever – once they start a family. Sometimes men feel rejected and unloved by their wives because of the amount of time she is devoting to caring for their baby or children. Some women feel resentment towards their husbands because they don’t feel like their husband is involved enough in taking care of the children and household. Husbands and wives need to understand that they have to work together as a parenting team and they also cannot forget to foster and nourish their relationship as a couple.

Many married couples experience a major slow-down in their sex lives once they begin having children. Women often feel differently about their bodies after childbirth, and they become insecure and less comfortable being intimate. Often, women gain a substantial amount of weight during pregnancy, and they have a hard time dropping the excess pounds after they give birth because they are so overwhelmed with the responsibilities of being a new mommy.

It can be very hard for women to regain their self-esteem and reclaim a positive body image. A woman who used to feel great ripping her clothes off and getting naked before making love with the lights on may feel like hiding herself and keeping the lights off -- if she even wants to be intimate at all -- after she has a baby. Many husbands have a hard time understanding why their wives cannot just relax about their post-childbirth looks.

A good husband loves his wife and sees her as the most beautiful woman in the world; he thinks that his wife looks wonderful, even with a few extra pounds on after having a baby. The last thing that a man should do is comment on his wife’s changed appearance in a negative way. Doing so will seal his fate on the couch and out of the bed. The bottom line is that sex and physical intimacy are important aspects of a marriage, and they shouldn’t be neglected. It is certainly understandable that your sex life will not be as spicy as it has been in the past for several months after a child is born. Both spouses will be very busy and sleep-deprived, and women will still be physically recovering from the delivery itself.

Husbands should reassure their wives that they are sexy and attractive. Do not let the romance and chivalry die in your relationship just because you are now parents. Make sure that you keep the love alive – write your wife a poem, bring home flowers, cover the bed in rose petals. You have to put in an effort – more of an effort that you had to put in before you had a kid or kids – but it will be worth it in a major way.

Wives have to remember that although they are mothers now, they still have to be attentive and loving to their husbands. You may feel all “nurtured out” by the time your husband gets home from work, but your husband needs your love, just as you need his. If you are a stay-at-home mom, you should try not to forget about the hard work that your husband does outside the home. This is not to say that your work at home isn’t just as hard; in fact, it’s harder.

However, your husband has to know that you are proud of him and you are happy that he is financially providing for your family. Ask him how his day was – don’t just dive into a laundry list of all the chaos that you experienced in your own day. Send him off with a kiss every morning, and an “I love you.” Don’t be resentful of the fact that your husband gets to go into work for eight hours a day while you have a round-the-clock job. If you don’t want to be a stay-at-home mom, then don’t be one. If you do want to be a stay-at-home mom, then embrace your life and don’t punish your husband for what he is doing to support your family monetarily.

Benefits of massage

We often think of massage as a healthy way to relax, to relieve the tension of the day. While this is true, there are many other reasons to incorporate massage into your weekly, or at least monthly, schedule. With proven positive effects on both the physical and psychological side of wellness, research shows that massage therapy lowers heart rate, increases blood circulation and lymph flow, lowers blood pressure, aids in digestion, relaxes muscles, eliminates toxins, improves range of motion, and increases endorphins, which effect pain perception.

Western styles of massage include Swedish, deep tissue and soft tissue. These approaches incorporate stroking and kneading of the skin and muscles for relaxation and pain relief. Eastern massage addresses energy flow and balance. Most eastern styles see the human body as a pattern of energy channels. Disease and pain are symptoms of a blockage or imbalance in these channels. Try an array of methods to find which meets your individual needs.

Many people, who are already sick or stressed, see a massage therapist as the last helpful alternative. Although it’s never too late to benefit from these healing methods, it’s better to look at massage therapy as preventative health care. Keep in mind this practice is only one important element to your overall sense of health and well-being. Massage benefits are greatly enhanced when the individual takes accountability for his/her health through diet, exercise .

When should you get a massage?

Many people argue they can’t get a massage on a regular basis because they either don’t have the time or money. However, in order to take care of others, we must first take care of ourselves. Make time for regular massage. Many therapists work on a sliding scale according to a client’s budget, so don’t assume that a weekly or monthly massage is out of reach. Get referrals for an independent massage therapist in your community instead of going to a high-end spa (spa therapists often have to split their earnings with their company). Independent therapists usually charge anywhere from $45-$75 per hour and $25-$40 dollars per half hour. Remember to ask the practitioner if they graduated from an accredited school, and are skilled in the type of massage that meets your needs.

Have good sleep every night

Tips for a Good Night's Sleep

Do you want to be productive, mentally sharp, emotionally balanced, and full of energy all day long? The way you feel during your waking hours hinges on how well you sleep at night.

The cure to sleep difficulties and daytime fatigue can often be found in your daily routine. Your sleep schedule, bedtime habits, and day–to–day lifestyle choices make an enormous difference in the quality of your nightly rest. The following sleep tips will help you optimize your nightly rest, minimize insomnia, and lay the foundation for all–day energy and peak performance.

The secret to getting good sleep every night

Are you getting enough sleep?

If you have trouble keeping your energy up all day or get sleepy whenever you slow down, you’re probably not getting the sleep you need.

Learn how to determine your nightly sleep needs and recover from chronic sleep loss.

Read: How Much Sleep Do You Need?

Good sleep strategies are essential to deep, restorative sleep you can count on, night after night. By learning to avoid common enemies of sleep and trying out a variety of healthy sleep–promoting techniques, you can discover your personal prescription to a good night’s rest.

The key is to experiment. What works for some might not work as well for others. It’s important to find the sleep strategies that work best for you.

How much sleep is enough?

The first step to improving the quality of your rest is finding out how much sleep you need. While sleep requirements vary slightly from person to person, most healthy adults need at least 8 hours of sleep each night to function at their best.

How to sleep better tip 1: Keep a regular sleep schedule

Getting back in sync with your body’s natural sleep–wake cycle—your circadian rhythm—is one of the most important strategies for achieving good sleep. If you keep a regular sleep schedule, going to bed and getting up at the same time each day, you will feel much more refreshed and energized than if you sleep the same number of hours at different times. This holds true even if you alter your sleep schedule by only an hour or two. Consistency is important.

  • Set a regular bedtime. Go to bed at the same time every night. Choose a time when you normally feel tired, so that you don’t toss and turn. Try not to break this routine on weekends when it may be tempting to stay up late. If you want to change your bedtime, help your body adjust by making the change in small daily increments, such as 15 minutes earlier or later each day.
  • Wake up at the same time every day. If you’re getting enough sleep, you should wake up naturally without an alarm. If you need an alarm clock to wake up on time, you may need to set an earlier bedtime. As with your bedtime, try to maintain your regular wake–time even on weekends.
  • Nap to make up for lost sleep. If you need to make up for a few lost hours, opt for a daytime nap rather than sleeping late. This strategy allows you to pay off your sleep debt without disturbing your natural sleep–wake rhythm, which often backfires in insomnia and throws you off for days.
  • Be smart about napping. While taking a nap can be a great way to recharge, especially for older adults, it can make insomnia worse. If insomnia is a problem for you, consider eliminating napping. If you must nap, do it in the early afternoon, and limit it to thirty minutes.
  • Fight after–dinner drowsiness. If you find yourself getting sleepy way before your bedtime, get off the couch and do something mildly stimulating to avoid falling asleep, such as washing the dishes, calling a friend, or getting clothes ready for the next day. If you give in to the drowsiness, you may wake up later night and have trouble getting back to sleep.

How to Stop Snoring

cures, remedies, and tips for you and your partner

Snoring

Just about everyone snores occasionally. Even a baby or a beloved pet may snore! But snoring can affect the quantity and quality of your sleep. Poor sleep can lead to daytime fatigue, irritability, and increased health problems. And, if your snoring is so loud that your bed partner can't sleep, you may end up banished from the bedroom.

Sleeping in separate bedrooms doesn’t have to be the remedy for your snoring. In fact, there are many effective treatments for snoring. Discovering the cause of your snoring and finding the right cure will vastly improve your health, your relationships, and, of course, your sleep.

The causes of snoring: Identify the cause to find the cure

Have you ever sneezed one day from allergies then sneezed another day from a bad cold? Snoring is like that. In other words, not all snoring is the same. Everyone snores for different reasons. When we get to the bottom of why we snore, then we can find the right solutions to a quieter, deeper sleep.

People who snore often have too much throat and nasal tissue, or “floppy” tissue that is more prone to vibrate. The position of your tongue can also get in the way of smooth breathing. Evaluating how and when you snore will help you pinpoint whether the cause of your snoring is within your control or not. The good news is that no matter how and when you snore, there are solutions to making it better.

Where does the snore sound come from?

Snoring is caused by a narrowing of your airway, either from poor sleep posture or abnormalities of the soft tissues in your throat. A narrow airway gets in the way of smooth breathing and creates the sound of snoring.

Common causes of snoring

Although it may be upsetting to think that there could be problems at the root of you or your bed buddy’s snoring, it’s important to get to the bottom of it. When you do, you’ll protect your health, and the intimacy of your relationship.

  • Age. As you reach middle age and beyond, your throat becomes narrower, and the muscle tone in your throat decreases.
  • The way you’re built. Men have narrower air passages than women and are more likely to snore. A narrow throat, a cleft palate, enlarged adenoids, and other physical attributes (which contribute to snoring) can be hereditary.
  • Nasal and sinus problems. Blocked airways make inhalation difficult and create a vacuum in the throat, leading to snoring.
  • Being overweight or out of shape. Fatty tissue and poor muscle tone contribute to snoring.
  • Alcohol, smoking, and medications. Alcohol intake, smoking (or second-hand smoke), and certain medications, increase muscle relaxation leading to more snoring.
  • Sleep posture. Sleeping flat on your back causes the flesh of your throat to relax and block the airway.

Snoring and sleep apneaSnoring and sleep apnea

Snoring could indicate sleep apnea, a potentially life-threatening condition that requires medical attention. Sleep apnea is a breathing obstruction, causing the sleeper to awaken to begin breathing again. A person with sleep apnea wakes up many times a night to regain breathing, but usually doesn’t remember it. Serious risks of sleep apnea include sleep deprivation, oxygen deprivation, and depression.

Don’t let snoring damage your relationship

Is snoring causing a riff in your relationship? No matter how much you love each other, lack of sleep can strain a relationship and put your health at risk. Though some snoring is harmless, other times it can indicate poor quality sleep as well as critical health problems such as sleep apnea.

Sharing a bed is one of the greatest pleasures of a romantic relationship because it fosters intimacy and closeness. Bedding down for the night should be a pleasant part of the evening that you and your partner look forward to. However, snoring can create a huge relationship roadblock because it prevents this joint end-of-day ritual. When snoring is a problem, relationship tension grows in the following ways.

  • Sleeping alone. If your partner snores, you might decide to sleep alone. That only makes for a lack of physical intimacy and a strained relationship. And if you’re the one snoring, you might feel lonely, isolated, and frustrated about something you feel you can’t control.
  • Snoring spats. It’s common to be irritable when lack of sleep is an issue. But try reining in your frustration. Remember, you want to attack the snoring problem—not your sleep partner.
  • Partner resentment. Partner resentment can grow when a non-snorer feels they do everything possible to sleep through the night (ear-plugs, noise-machines) but their partner does nothing to combat their own snoring. Working as a team to self-remedy will prevent future fights.

If you value your relationship, make it your priority to solve snoring so you can sleep together. Think of it like this: the way you and your bed buddy handle a snoring problem is a sign of the strength of your relationship. Working together to stop snoring can be an opportunity to improve the quality of your bond and become more connected.

Communicating with a partner who snores

So you love everything about your partner…except their snoring. It’s normal. Even the most patient amongst us will draw the line at sleep deprivation. But no matter how much sleep is lost due to secondhand snoring, it’s important to handle the problem sensitively. Remember that your partner likely feels vulnerable, isolated, and even a little embarrassed. And although it can be healthy for the relationship to communicate those vulnerabilities, it can be hurtful if done in an uncaring way. The following tips can help you approach your partner about his or her snoring.

  • Time your talk carefully. Avoid middle of the night or early morning discussions when you’re feeling exhausted.
  • Keep in mind it’s not intentional. Although it’s easy to feel like a victim when you lose sleep, remember that your partner isn’t keeping you awake on purpose.
  • Avoid lashing out. Sure sleep deprivation is aggravating and can be damaging to your health, but try your best to approach the problem in a non-confrontational way.
  • Beware of bitterness. Make sure that latching onto snoring is not an outlet for other hidden resentments you’re harboring.
  • Use humor and playfulness to bring up the subject without hurting your partner’s feelings. Laughing about it can ease tension. Just make sure it doesn’t turn into too much teasing.

Dealing with complaints about your snoring

It’s common to be caught off guard—not to mention a little hurt—about your snoring. After all, you probably don’t even realize it’s happening. And although it might seem silly that snoring can cause such relationship turmoil, it’s a common and a very real problem. If you dismiss your partner’s concerns and refuse to try to solve the problem, you’re sending a clear message to your partner that you don’t care about their needs. This could mean your relationship is in trouble, and that’s a bigger problem than the snoring.

Keep the following in mind as you and your partner work together to beat snoring.

  • Snoring is a physical issue. Typically, snorers feel a little embarrassed about their problem. Try to keep in mind that snoring is a physical issue. Like a pulled muscle or a common cold, improving the condition is in your hands.
  • Avoid taking it personally. Try not to take your partner’s frustration as a personal critique or attack. Your partner loves you, just not the snoring.
  • Take your partner seriously. Avoid minimizing complaints. Lack of sleep is a health hazard and can make you feel miserable all day.
  • Make it clear that you prioritize the relationship. If you and your partner have this understanding, you’ll both do what it takes to make the snoring better.
  • Address inappropriate behavior. Although sleep deprivation can lead to moodiness and irritability, let your partner know that it’s not okay for them to throw an elbow jab or snap at you when you’re snoring.

Self-help tips and snoring remedies

The good news is that there are is a lot you can do to stop snoring. Just be prepared to summon some patience, do a little detective work, and troubleshoot to try different remedies. Likely your snoring won’t go away over night, but keep at it. With a little teamwork, you and your partner can combat noisy nights together.

Begin getting to the bottom of a snoring problem by enlisting your non-snoring sleep partner to keep a sleep diary to help you sleuth the possible causes of your snoring. Monitoring the snoring will help diagnose why you snore and how to stop it.

How you snore reveals why you snore

It’s crucial to note to the different ways you sleep and snore. Sleep positions reveal a lot, and figuring out how you snore can reveal why you snore. When you know why you snore, you can get closer to a cure.

  • Closed-mouth snoring may indicate a problem with the tongue.
  • Open-mouth snoring may be related to the tissues in your throat.
  • Snoring when sleeping on back is probably mild – improved sleep habits and lifestyle changes may be effective cures.
  • Snoring in all sleep positions can mean snoring is more severe and may require a more comprehensive treatment.

Troubleshoot to stop snoring

So you’ve tried different sleeping positions and you still suffer from noisy nights? Try the following self-help tips.

  • Lose weight. Losing even a little bit of weight can reduce fatty tissue in the back of the throat and decrease snoring. See Healthy Weight Loss Your Way for some tips on getting started. Exercise in general can help because toning arms, legs, and abs inadvertently leads to toning muscles you don’t see in the throat, which leads to less snoring.
  • Clear nasal passages. Having a stuffy nose makes inhalation difficult and creates a vacuum in your throat, which in turn leads to snoring. You can do it naturally with a Neti pot or try nasal decongestants or nasal strips to help you breathe more easily while sleeping.
  • Quit smoking. If you smoke, your chances of snoring are high. Smoking causes airways to be blocked by irritating the membranes in the nose and throat.
  • Establish regular sleep patterns. Create a bedtime ritual with your partner and stick to it. Hitting the sack in a routine way together can promote better sleep and therefore minimize snoring.
  • Keep bedroom air moist with a humidifier. Dry air can irritate membranes in the nose and throat.
  • Reposition. Elevating your head four inches may ease breathing and encourage your tongue and jaw to move forward. (Tip: go pillow-free or try a specially designed pillow to make sure your neck muscles are not crimped).

Tip: The tennis ball trick

Do you sleep on your back? Try the “tennis ball trick”: sleep with a tennis ball (or similar sized ball) attached to the back of your pajama top. (You can sew or safety-pin a sock to the back of the pajama top, then put a tennis ball in it.) The tennis ball is uncomfortable if you lie on your back, and you will respond by turning on your side. Soon you will develop side-sleeping as a habit and not need the tennis ball.

Reduce snoring by avoiding the following substances

Research shows that consumption of certain foods and medicines right before bedtime can make snoring worse. Placing a household ban on the following snore-hazards right before bedtime can make for quieter nights.

  • Large meals
  • Dairy products
  • Soymilk
  • Alcohol
  • Sleeping pills and other relaxants
  • Antihistamines
  • Caffeine

Throat exercises to stop snoring

Done 30 minutes a day, throat exercises can be a cost-effective snore-reducer for people with mild to moderate sleep apnea. Studies show that by pronouncing certain vowel sounds and curling the tongue in specific ways, muscles in the upper respiratory tract are strengthened and therefore reduce snoring.

Try the following exercises to stop snoring. Start slow and gradually increase the number of sets you do every few days.

  • Repeat each vowel (a-e-i-o-u) out loud for three minutes throughout day.
  • Place the tip of your tongue behind your top front teeth. Slide your tongue backwards for 3 minutes a day
  • Close your mouth and purse your lips. Hold for 30 seconds.
  • With mouth open, move jaw to the right and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat on left side
  • With mouth open, contract the muscle at the back of your throat repeatedly for 30 seconds. Tip: Look in the mirror to see the uvula (“the hanging ball”) move up and down.

Alternative remedies for snoring

  • Singing – Singing can increase muscle control in the throat and soft palate, reducing snoring caused by lax muscles.
  • Playing the didgeridoo – Thinking of taking up a new instrument? Studies show that learning to play a didgeridoo can strengthen the soft palate and throat, reducing snoring.

Medical cures and treatments for snoring

If the self-helps aren’t silencing your noisy bedroom, don’t abandon hope. Medical treatments could make all the difference. Luckily, advances are being made all the time and devices are becoming more effective and more comfortable. So even if your doctor recommended something in the past that was uncomfortable or didn’t work, that doesn’t mean the same will be true now.

Medical remedies for snoring

When your own efforts to stop snoring do not help, consult your physician or an otolaryngologist (an ear, nose, and throat doctor, otherwise known as an ENT). If you choose to try a dental appliance for your snoring, you will need to see a dentist specializing in these devices.

  • Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). To keep your airway open during sleep, a machine at your bedside blows pressurized air into a mask that you wear over your nose or face.
  • Dental appliances, oral devices, and lower jaw-positioners often resemble an athlete’s mouth guard. They help open your airway by bringing your lower jaw or your tongue forward during sleep.
  • Traditional surgery such as Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP), Thermal Ablation Palatoplasty (TAP), tonsillectomy, and adenoidectomy, increase the size of your airway by surgically removing tissues or correcting abnormalities. The Pillar procedure is also an effective surgery in which small plastic implants are inserted into the soft palate. Scar tissue grows around the implants, stiffening the soft palate, which stops vibrations that cause snoring.
  • New developments. Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) and somnoplasty remove parts of the soft palate to reduce snoring using lasers or radiofrequency signals. These newer remedies may require further study.

When to see a doctor

Some snoring indicates a serious warning sign. Call your doctor if your sleep partner shows any of the following red flags.

  • Snores loudly and heavily and is tired during the day
  • Stops breathing, gasps, or chokes during sleep
  • Falls asleep at inappropriate times, such as during a conversation or a meal
